Thanks Mr. Typewriter,

In the example you have given, the basic presumption is that the sales organisations have been created on geographical basis.

However, in our case, it is a bit different. I will try my best to illustrate with an closely related scenario.

We have created material abc for plant 001 and then extended to plant 002, for the same sales organisation and distribution channel as we have only one sales organisation for the entire country. So, material can be supplied by either of the plants. When we are creating the sales order, the default plant should be 001 and not 002 (as per SAP logic). But it is not happening so. It is taking 002 in the sales order. As you said it can be changed, that is how I'm managing the situation know. But, I want to know why it is behaving the correct way.

I'm investigating that, along side the suggestions you have given.

Thank you all for your responses, Please do input any further suggestions.

I will let you know as well if I'm able to find what it is.

Warm regards,
Saratvamsi

Subject: How is plant determined

Hi,

Jim has put it succinctly & correct.

If you go to MM01 or MM02, you first have to fill in Sales Org and Distribution channel. Thus for SOrg, DChan. combination you can have different delivering plants.

E.g. For Material M-1, the delivery plants are as follows -
For S Org handling customers from North of Germany and D.channel Retail --> You assign Delivering Plant as Hannover (in the North)

For S Org handling customers from South of Germany and D.channel Retail --> You assign Delivering Plant as Berlin (in the South)

With this above setting in MM01, you go to VA01, give Order type & Sales Org + Distribution channel; depending upon S Org & DC filled in the Sales Order system shall go and look at the MMR field "Delivering Plant" in Sales:Sales Org 1, of Material with the same S Org and D channel combination.

So, user creates an order in VA01, types in SOrg North of Ger. with D channel Retail for material M-1 system shall default Plant Hannover.

So, user creates an order in VA01, types in SOrg South of Ger. with D channel Retail for material M-1 system shall default Plant Berlin.

It is NOT possible to have 2 default plants, for the same Sales Org + Distribution channel. But you can manually change the plant, if need be.

You shall have to go to MM01 and EXTEND the material to all the S.Orgs and D.channels.
