in the mean time we had that wonderfull mail from Dougie ....which would have de-mystified some of your queries.

There are two type of scenarios in configuration / Img activities

When we do an activity (say assigning one entity to other ) all it may lead to is an entry into configuration or Master Data Tables. Mostly functional consultant (and beginners ) will believe that there activity has generated a code or a program . Reality is that the activity
has just created few entries in config/master data table , and the same program might be using that and all those database records. And because records are different ...the sequence of chain of programs called and their outcome would be different. But the fact remains no extra code was generated(In your case Item Category / Usage) .

There are cases in which system would automatically generate some code by virtue of IMG activity specially when we copy the functions ....viz copy chart of a/cs or copy pricing procedures. But what is important is that usually no values ( of entities dear to you ) would be hard coded in the code. Dynamic assignment of data entities is what SAP is all about.

And this is what we do by virtue of configuration and customization. We put those variables in respective places(tables ) so that system can pick them logically with least of end user botheration. This is a rather simplistic picture. Now to tell you about the programs where the data goes or goes through , one need to put /h in command window (just before executing the watch of IMG ) and you have a slow walk through the code , it tells you everything.

But one last and only important point that I want to make is >> "The Code may be hard(to understand) ...but code is never 'Hard Coded' ...it is dynamic ...it picks variables from database appropriately .

Have you already replied for - creation / modification of Item category Usage? (and it has not yet arrived + contact with system admin)

If we follow the below path * there are a number of standard Usage, you can copy and create a new one (e.g. ZTXT or ZFRE) but then - I suppose - these shall have the exact same programming as the original; these usages shall have to be modified, where is that done; if possible some more business use knowledge + your past experience.
