For your requirement of a message when A (or B) is in the sales order, you could look in to Material Determination.
Set up for material A substitute with material A and field "Strategy" in the substitution reason.
Thus when user creates a sales order with material A, there would automatically be a popup with a message - something like - Material A to be replaced by Material A.
