RE:[sap-log-sd] Common Distribution of Channels and Assign SORG,

Hi Saps,

There have been some helpful posts by members (Eklavya and Marcel).

I was thinking of your question and I would like to give you some points so that "this concept" (Point 1) could be made clear.
And also the question in your original post is answered -
"In that case, why do we again need to assign common dist channels specially?" (Point 2)

1. "This concept" -

A. Master data management (e.g. CMRs, MMRs, condition records) - During the implementation of a vaniella project it is very important for a consultant to understand
- do CMRs, MMRs, condition records have different values, for different Sorgs, for different Dchans, for different divisions (not relevant for MMRs)?
This question is important to "manage" the creation and maintenance of master data. With lots of thought, analysis and experience - this is set up.

I suggest that you take some scenarios - different d channels, different sorgs and think would there be a difference in the condition records (e.g. prices) or would it be same? Based on that you (sd consultant) or user (MDM team member) would have to set up "Ref Dchan also called Common Dchan".

This is not something that can be mastered only by reading F1 or by reading some theory. Try to practice in the SAP system, talk with some colleagues who have worked in the configuration of master data or some users of the MDM team.

B. Sales area & Sales document type - Here too there is a concept of "Common Dchan" and "Common Div"

Understanding for which sales areas a sales document type should be permitted. & the next step to minimize the sales areas assigned to the sales document type, SAP provides us "Common Dchan & Div" concept.

Both A and B have an interrelation and by doing some tests you can see this interrelation.

2. And also the question in your original post - "In that case, why do we again need to assign common dist channels specially?"

A plant can NOT be used as a "Selling plant" (in VA01) unless it is assigned to SalesOrg, Dchan.

If this assignment is NOT done, then the below error follows -

Sales from sales organization, 1000 dist. chan.14, plant 1200 are not defined
Message no. V1369

In the place of givinv Sorg , EVERY INDIVIDUAL Dchan to a plant.
SAP has given the option of Sorg, REFERENCE Dchan to a plant.

But to make use of the "ref Dchan" concept to assign to a plant, the below set up has to be done first.

In turn (in Point1), A and B (above) user / configurer has to set up -

EVERY INDIVIDUAL Dchan to REFERENCE Dchan
EVERY INDIVIDUAL Dchan to REFERENCE Dchan
EVERY INDIVIDUAL Dchan to REFERENCE Dchan

CONCLUSION -
The high level objective is to minimize the master data records by using the concept of Reference.

Sidenote - If in the SAP system, every individual Dchan is set up as a Ref Dchan, then each CMR, MMR and Condition record would have to be created for ALL individual Dchan. A sales document type would have to be allowed for EVERY sales area. Resulting is LOT of MD maintenance.

To truely understand and use it in real time, one has to practice, think and observe this concept rigorously.

If you have more questions, comments; please do post them.

Subject: Common Distribution of Channels and Assign SORG,

Hi,

When we are doing the config. settings in IMG assigning sorg, dch and plant, the F1 help for dch says:

Reference distrib.channel for customer and material masters
Specifies a distribution channel that you want to use as a reference for customer and material master data for other distribution channels.

Procedure
You can specify one distribution channel as the source of customer and material master data for other distribution channels. You need then only to maintain the data in one place.

Example
Distrib.channel Ref.distrib.channel
01 01
02 01
03 01
04 04

In this example, only distribution channels 01 and 04 have customer and material master data defined. Distribution channels 01, 02, and 03 share the master data that you defined for distribution channel 01. Distribution channel 04 has its own master data. When you create a sales order in distribution channel 03, the system checks the customer and material master data against the data defined for distribution channel 01

In that case, why do we again need to assign common dist channels specially?

Thanks and regards,
Saps
