There are lots of options. We have a few remote warehouse/storage sites and they are each set up differently in our system (R3, 4.7), according to our requirements. First question though, do you have WM implemented? We do, so I wouldn't want to lead you incorrectly with suggestions based on our experience that are not possible in your system.
