Hello,

It seems the number range that has been assigned to the account group is external, hence you need to assign a number to the customer master...the system will not generate a number for the master record.

You can check whether the number range assigned is external or internal in T-code XDN1.

This is a SAP error and I have faced this many a times.

Create a new number range and assign it to the account group of the customer master.
And then try creating the customer master.
This will help, however I am afraid this is not a permanent resolution.
