Hi Michael,
In the copy control for the contract type to sales order type (on header level) you can specify if you want to copy the item number (transaction VTAA). Give that a go and see if it meets your requirements.

Can you control the item numbers generated when you do a create sales order with reference to a contract?

You can select the item numbers to copy, but the item numbers are not retained in the order. New item numbers are created and then are not modifiable. Select item 10 & 30 from contract and it creates item 10 & 20 in the sales order. We need to retain the same item numbers or be able to modify them. Otherwise we can utilize this functionality.
