Sap Sale Module: [sap-log-sd] Handling units with External Identification

Dear experts,

I am new to Handling units. I need to load external handling units for finished goods in my new warehouse in SAP.

My question is if I load the external handling units (from legacy system which is SAP) into the my new warehouse, how is the HU to be further handled. As the ILN basis number for HU in the legacy system is different than the new system I cannot use the external HU as it is for shipping via outbound delivery. How is this scenario handled in SAP? Once the external handling units are loaded is it again unpacked and then repacked with internal HU . So what is the exact purpose of loading external HU number .

Can anyone please explain the correct practice?
